It has become increasingly difficult for students to apply academic knowledge in professional settings, and few institutions are truly committed to breaking down the schism between education and the workplace. However, Santa Monica College and KCRW came to us with precisely this design challenge. The new campus that resulted is a symbiotic experiment in co-locating a media education program and a professional broadcasting organization to maximize the collateral benefits between the two renowned institutions.

In addition to classrooms, the expanded building contains a 180-seat auditorium, a production suite, a broadcasting suite, editing bays, computer labs and collaboration spaces. Rather than focusing on narrow professional development, our curriculum fosters experimentation across a range of different media. We privilege a social outlook, process, experimentation, and personal growth over conservatism and commercialism and we search for students who share the same goals.

In addition to classes taken within the DMA department, students complete a series of general education courses and are encouraged to take other electives from the university to broaden their experience. A complete list of all DMA classes with descriptions is available in the UCLA General Catalog and individual class websites can be found on the DMA Classes website. This uniquely challenging and diverse program invites students to balance aesthetic sensibility with logical reasoning, formal theories with practical application, and contemporary thought with historical perspective. Most courses are taught as studios of no more than 22 students, which encourages individual growth and fosters a sense of community within the department. As a professional center for the convergence of media, KCRW is the ideal and logical endpoint for this narrative. Characterized by a similar internal path and open workspaces, the station will share its resources to encourage creative collaboration and educational reciprocity. The unfolding ribbon continues into the 30,000-square-foot addition, wherein students can explore and experiment with their ideas in professional-grade workspaces.

Santa Monica College has completed an extensive $62 million renovation and improvement project at the College’s Stewart Campus. The renovation and expansion of the existing 72,000-square-foot Center for Media and Design building is part of the comprehensive site and infrastructure improvements completed across the 3.7-acre campus. The renovated and expanded building provides new classroom and lab facilities in a newly energized environment supporting studies in digital media, animation, graphic design and interior architecture. The building also serves as the social hub of the Stewart Campus, providing student services that include a bookstore, café, study areas and open computer lab, an auditorium and screening room, and a wide assortment of student gathering places. An adjacent building provides a sophisticated new home for KCRW, the College’s highly regarded radio station serving Southern California and a global Internet audience.

After several weeks of visioning with SMC, the Design Team determined that the fundamental idea uniting the CMD and KCRW is storytelling. Together, we envisioned this project as presaging a future educational model, one that leverages the possibilities of new media as a clarifying agent to shape the complex narratives of the world into a meaningful story. Thus, we set out to create architecture that acts as a narrative vehicle, shaping the campus into a sequence of experiences that showcase education as a progressive cycle. The three buildings and the central courtyard embody a student’s progression from higher education to the professional world. Our design process began with an intensive period of curriculum analysis, classroom visits, facility tours, client workshops, and visioning sessions. Early on, it became clear that the Client considered instructional education alone insufficient preparation for a world in constant flux.
